Stuart, named after Homer Hine Stuart, Jr., was incorporated as a town in 1914. Before then it was known as Potsdam. Stuart is the only incorporated city of Martin County, Florida, on Florida's Treasure Coast.
The city of Stuart is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World, because of the many sailfish found in the ocean off Martin County. Various businesses throughout the city cater to tourists, such as fishing charters, boating charters, sailing, cruises, SCUBA and snorkeling, and nature tours. However, the economy in Stuart is mostly driven by retail service, hospitality, construction and government sectors located throughout the city.
